Cobblestones and portuguese pavement

It is a square or rectangular stone with different finishes on surfaces and edges, depending on the use or aesthetics sought: natural, sheared, sawn, flamed or bush-hammered. They can be, therefore, of irregular format or mechanised in the cutting process, thus being more rustic or more elaborate, depending on the requirements of the work. They always have high resistance values in flooring (compression, bending, freezing or slipping).

Normally used as urban paving, creating roadways such as streets, pedestrian areas, pavements with vehicle traffic or high pedestrian traffic, such as squares and similar, due to its high resistance. The type of use of this paving: pedestrian, passage of vehicles (light and/or heavy), weathering (ice), etc…, determines the thickness and method of laying the paving stones (on a bed of sand or glued on a concrete slab). As they are usually of a small or cubic format, they allow a wide range of designs in cobblestone paving: in herringbone, in rows, in fans, in circular shapes or with fixed widths and variable lengths; creating decorative motifs with stones of different colours.

They also form cobblestones, such as those made with the typical Portuguese paving, a type of laying that emerged in Portugal in the 19th century. It is made with small irregular prisms or cobblestones of sheared limestone, on a bed of dry mortar on which they are laid. Numerous examples of paving in large squares and pedestrian pavements in Portuguese roadways, now centuries old, can be found throughout the Portuguese area of influence. Various colours can be found, with which decorative mosaics can be formed. The Portuguese pavement is a current trend that has spread from neighbouring Portugal to the whole of Spain.
