Masonry and slabs

These are irregular slabs of natural stone with a relatively homogeneous thickness that are laid as paving on terraces, walkways, pavements and swimming pool beaches. It is a construction technique from the time of Ancient Rome (Opus Incertum in Latin, literally “irregular work”), being one of the first uses of the phyllites, slates and quartzite from our own quarries.  Mainly used outdoors as it is not a calibrated product and has all natural faces, ideal for rustic decorations and environments that evoke nature, such as garden and landscaping works. Due to its irregular shape, it is a product that is usually cemented and grouted, also with the compacted soil itself, or held in place with the grass itself. Nowadays it is more commonly called planchón or planchoncillo irregular, being the most economical way to have natural stone for our floors.

Increasingly used as a decorative stone for the garden, as a Japanese step for example with larger slabs, to create a path in the lawn or between decorative edgings; simple layouts in which you can design the stone decoration of your garden yourself.

In cladding it is used as masonry, i.e. using masonry blocks or stones that can be handled by hand, forming the wall. This type of laying is very common in the Mediterranean area, and stands out for its luminosity.

Depending on how it is laid, this type of masonry can be:

Dry masonry: the masonry is laid without mortar.

Ordinary masonry: the masonry is joined together using lime or cement mortar. The surfaces are rough.

Faced masonry: the masonry is also grouted with mortar, but the face of the masonry facing the exterior is left more or less flat. In this way, the exterior appearance is quite pleasant, with a flat surface.

Jointed masonry: in jointed masonry, the exposed face is left flat, and the contact surfaces with the other surrounding masonry are also more or less flat. The result is masonry with apparent shapes that are more or less square or rectangular.
