Slate for Roofing

We produce, supply, and install various types of slate for roof covering, in dimensioned or irregular cuts.

We offer various types of slate for use in roofing, with different tones such as multicolor, black, and, of course, the Grey Phyllite from Bernardos. This material from our own quarries is the first slate in Spain used on an industrial level for this purpose, as evidenced by numerous historical buildings in the country, such as the Monastery of El Escorial or the Alcázar of Segovia, which testify to its quality and durability. This slate, which achieves the highest ratings in the analyses established in the EN 12326 standard, is highly valued in the European market, where the use of roofing slate is most prevalent and prestigious.

The use of slate on roofs is one of the oldest and most widespread uses for this type of natural stone in construction, as evidenced by numerous historical buildings worldwide.

Although construction, particularly in roofing, has advanced significantly with the introduction of new insulation and waterproofing systems, the use of slate, thanks to its excellent qualities, has changed little.

In ancient times, roughly hewn slates were used in popular constructions in regions where this material was readily available. From the 11th century onwards, fine and regular pieces of slate began to be used in Europe, thanks to their ease of exfoliation, becoming an exclusive material used in noble houses, churches, and castles. Today, the use of slate roofing has become widespread, especially in mountainous areas and rainy regions, where the insulation and waterproofing properties of this ornamental stone are essential. It is usually installed nailed with hooks or nails, on wooden battens, together with or without hydrophobic and insulating panels, on the roof structure, forming a ventilated roof system that provides significant protection against adverse weather conditions.

Slate roofing offers a combination of beauty and exceptional durability, significantly reducing the maintenance of the building and even allowing for reuse. It provides excellent insulation to the buildings it covers, contributing to significant energy savings. Therefore, we can also say that it is the most sustainable material, with the lowest carbon footprint, and the most environmentally friendly option for covering the roof of any building.
