Slate for Roofing

We manufacture, supply and lay slates in various types of slate for roofing, in sized or irregular cuts.

We offer various types of slate for use on roofs, in different tones such as multicoloured, black and, of course, Bernardos Grey Slate. This material, which comes from our own quarries, is the first slate in Spain to be used industrially for this purpose, as can be seen in many of the country’s historic buildings, such as the Escorial Monastery and the Alcázar of Segovia, which bear witness to its quality and durability. This slate, which achieves the highest qualifications in the analyses established in the EN 12326 standard, is highly appreciated in the European market, where the use of slate for roofing is most deeply rooted and prestigious.

The use of slate on roofs is one of the oldest and most widespread uses of this type of natural stone in construction, as can be seen in many historic buildings throughout the world.

Although there have been significant advances in construction, particularly in roofing, with new insulation and waterproofing systems being introduced, the use of slate, thanks to its excellent qualities, has changed little.

In ancient times, roughly hewn slate was used in popular constructions in regions where this material was available at hand. From the 11th century onwards, fine and regular pieces began to be used in Europe, thanks to its ease of exfoliation, becoming an exclusive material, used in noble houses, churches and castles. Nowadays, the use of slate in roofing has become widespread, especially in mountain areas and rainy regions, where the insulation and waterproofing of this ornamental stone is essential. It is usually nailed with hooks or spikes, on wooden battens; together or not, with waterproof and insulating panels, on the roof slab; forming a ventilated roof system that provides enormous protection from inclement weather.

Roofing slate offers a combination of beauty and exceptional durability, significantly reducing building maintenance and can even be reused. It offers excellent insulation to the buildings it covers, providing significant energy savings. It is therefore also the most sustainable, lowest carbon footprint and most environmentally friendly material that can be used to cover the roof of any building.
