PAVERS
An cobblestone is a square or rectangular stone with various finishes on surfaces and edges, depending on the intended use or aesthetic desired: natural, sheared, sawn, flamed, or bush-hammered. They can, therefore, be irregularly shaped or machined in a cutting process, thus being more rustic or elaborated, depending on the construction requirement. However, they are always endowed with high resistance values in paving (compression, flexion, frost resistance, or slip resistance).
Normally used as urban pavement, creating roads such as streets, pedestrian areas, sidewalks with vehicle traffic or high pedestrian traffic, such as squares and similar areas, due to their great resistance. The type of use of this pavement: pedestrian, vehicle passage (light and/or heavy), exposure to the elements (ice), etc., conditions the thickness and the method of laying the cobblestones (on a sand bed or glued on a concrete structure). As they are usually of a small or cubic format, they allow for a wide range of designs in cobblestone pavements: herringbone, rows, fan patterns, circular shapes, or with fixed widths and variable lengths; creating decorative motifs with stones of different colors.
They are also used to form “empedrados,” such as those made with the typical Portuguese pavement, a type of installation that emerged in Portugal in the 19th century. It is made with small irregular prisms or cobblestones of sheared limestone, on a dry mortar bed where they are laid. Numerous examples of pavements in Portuguese pavement, some centuries old, can be found throughout the Portuguese-influenced area. They come in various colors, with which decorative mosaics can be formed. Portuguese pavement is a current trend that has spread from neighboring Portugal to all of Spain.
